When I first started eating low carb and Keto, I thought people were crazy to do a “carb up” day. In my mind, it would knock me out of Ketosis which was a bad thing. But as I’m learning more and more about this way of eating, I’m starting to understand that, at least for women, this way of eating can have an impact on hormones. And that’s not always a good thing.
Mind you, this isn’t true for everyone. But there is a section of women out there on low carb diets that do end up with their hormones going a little wonky. And while I’m still learning and investigating this as much as I can, I am allowing myself one day a week where I eat slightly more carbs than usual. And I have to say that if done properly, I don’t seem to have any residual cravings or lose my ketosis. So far, it’s gone pretty well.
What I notice is that I have a clearer head during the week. A better reserve of energy, and slowed hair loss, which is something I struggled with in the beginning. But hair loss on a low carb diet can be for many reasons, including a simple shock to your system if you started a low carb diet abruptly. But it could also be hormonal, so it made sense to look into it further. I’m still investigating, but I’ll share more with you as I learn more.
As for now, I’m allowing myself little treats like this one day a week. Just one, not five or six. But it’s enough to keep me from feeling fatiqued, and that is just fine with me. Remember, this is an individual journey. What works for me may not work for you and visa versa. Sometimes, even though we know we’ve found what works best for us, we still have to tweak it just slightly.
So if you’re like me and need just slightly higher carbs, give this a try. You won’t be sorry!
