Caramelized French Onion Dip 101
This homemade dip is perfect for get-togethers or even just to have around home for the family to enjoy on a regular basis.
What you’ll need: Onions, butter, light olive oil (our grandmothers recipe called for vegetable oil so really any light oil will work), pepper, cayenne pepper, salt, cream cheese, sour cream and mayonnaise make this magical masterpiece.
What make this caramelized? Sauted onions and seasoning bring a distinct flavor to this dip that is hard to beat!
How long will caramelized french onion dip last? Stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container, this dip is good for 3-4 days. That is, if you have the willpower to make it last that long. This is one that gets gobbled up in a hurry at our gatherings and around the house. If you DO have some leftover, be sure to stir before serving again to make sure it stays fully mixed.
For the love of French Onion Dip
The classic dip has long held a special place in our hearts and party rotation. It’s a go-to for a reason, easy and generally a dip that many enjoy. A one-size-fits-all dip, as it were.
This legendary dip has not has a long of a history, however, as one might think. Its roots are in American cuisine, starting in 1954. One of those recipes that once printed, took on a life of its own.
Most “homemade” French Onion Dips were made with soup mix and sour cream, giving the classic caramelized flavor quickly.
We may be biased, but we feel like the real deal is SO much better. The flavor is more robust and the nutritional value is all around better.

Caramelized French Onion Dip
Ingredients
- 2 large chopped yellow onions
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 4 oz cream cheese
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
Instructions
- Heat butter and oil in large saute pan. Add the onion, cayenne pepper, salt and pepper.
- Saute for 10 minutes or until onions are tender. Reduce heat, stir occasionally until onions are brown and caramelized. Turn heat off and allow onions to cool.
- Place cream cheese, sour cream and mayo in bowl and beat until smooth. Add onions and mix well. Serve at room temp.
